Examples of Current Volunteer
needs:
The Porterfield
Adult Activities Committee is actively seeking to provide
opportunities for fellowship, service and outreach to both members and
non-members of Porterfield. Although the activities so far have been
mostly for adults, there is a strong desire to reach out to provide
activities for families as well. This is a co-operative association
which is designed to enlist the leadership skills of multiple
individuals to plan, organize and lead a variety of ad hoc activities
throughout the year. Every member contributes, but no one member
controls all events. The committee is divided into four sub-committees
– In-House Activities, Local and Short Trips, Long Trips, and Singles
Activities. They meet together as a group four times a year to
co-ordinate activities for each 3-month quarter. Creative ideas, a
desire to serve others, an adventurous spirit and joy in life are
characteristics of its members.
Members to serve on the In-House Committee. Help plan activities such
as bingo, line dancing, etc.
Members to serve on the Local & Short Trips Committee. Help plan
trips such as Springer Opera House, Little Theater in Albany, etc.
Members to serve on Long Trips Committee. Help plan trips to Atlanta
Aquarium, Montreal Canada, out of country, etc.
Members to serve on Singles Ministry Committee. Plan events for
Singles like Action Park, go to movies, missions work, etc.
HELPING HANDS MINISTRY – BETTY LOU MILLER
Porterfield’s Helping Hands Ministry is an opportunity to be God’s
hands in times of need. There are no meetings for most of these committees,
but people who sign up are called to use their skills and talents to help
mostly older church members to remain in their homes. There are five
sub-committees with different chairpersons who co-ordinate volunteers for
each ministry. Compassion, love for people, flexibility, and willingness to
share a variety of skills is characteristic of its participants.
Members to serve on Flower Committee. Rearrange the two large Sunday
morning’s altar flower arrangements into multiple smaller arrangements to be
distributed to people in the hospital, or at home who need a little “lift”.
Participants in this ministry work on a rotating basis, arranging flowers
about once every other month.
Members to serve on the Fix-It Committee Change light bulbs, fix a
squeaking door, check a malfunctioning heater or air conditioner, build a
ramp for adults, etc. for adults who cannot do these small jobs for
themselves. As needed
Members to serve on the Transportation Committee. Provide rides to
church events, doctor’s appointments, and shopping for those no longer able
to drive themselves.
Members to serve on the Food Committee. Provide meals and express the
church’s love, support and concern for members who are incapacitated due to
illness or trauma As needed
Members to serve on the Visitation Committee. Visit in private homes,
Nursing homes, and assisted living homes with and without a minister.
Training provided to help with listening skills and opportunities to share
experiences. 1-2 times a month. Every other month anyone is invited to ride
the van to visit friends and members who live at Magnolia Manor.
Members to serve on Phone Tree ministry for homebound members (call a
homebound member once a week)
GREETERS MINISTRY – BETTY LOU MILLER
This is the newest ministry for Porterfield Adult Ministries. We are
looking to recruit people who are willing to work on a rotating basis to
provide the ministry of hospitality for those who come to worship in our
church on Sunday mornings. Once we get enough volunteers, we will provide a
training class that will explain this three part ministry –which will
require a Coordinator for each service (8:30, 9:45, & 11:00), and,
for each service, stationed at each entrance to the Sanctuary/Ministry
Center, a Greeter who, in addition to our ushers, will welcome every
attendee and connect newcomers with another church member at the service,
and a Runner who will escort visitors to the children’s, youth or
adult Sunday School classes, offer printed material about Adult Activities,
mission opportunities, educational opportunities, Etc. Coordinators,
Greeters and Runners would serve once about every two months. Characteristic
for this ministry would be a willingness to meet new people, friendliness,
and an outgoing personality.
