Whiz Kids UPDATE for 2011-2012
We are arranging Porterfield’s tutoring agreement with Live Oak Elementary School. Please call the church (436-6336) to sign in or sign the bulletin board outside William’s office. The time commitment with WHIZ KIDS is Wednesday afternoon from 2:45-4:15 pm. We have some breaks for their school holidays. Our program will begin October, 2011 and last until April, 2012. We only tutor reading and spelling. If you can read and love, you already meet requirements. We are hoping that all veterans return and we welcome new volunteers!!
A mission oriented reading/tutoring program for first, second and third graders. Most Dougherty County elementary schools have a church partner who develops Whiz Kids. The large group is loosely connected by leader gatherings and everyone follows the same program. Teachers at the school nominate individual students whom they feel could benefit from weekly reading help with reading and comprehension skills. A packet of information about Whiz Kids is sent to the nominated students' parents. . Whiz Kid members are determined by the parents who give permission. Our church has partnered with Live Oak Elementary School for three years.
The talents required for Whiz Kid volunteers are: the ability to read and the ability to love. Each tutor is matched with the same student for the school year. Our Whiz Kids meet on Wednesday afternoons following school dismissal. Porterfield volunteers drive the church vans to pick up students at Live Oak school. All tutors meet students upon their arrival at the church. Following snacks and 'get acquainted' time, each team works on reading/comprehensive skills. Some teachers send particular work needed for their student. We do not do homework except spelling. At the end of the study time some students are picked up for their families at the church and some are driven back to school for pick-up.
We celebrate a spring graduation for Whiz Kid students, tutors and families. 80% of Whiz Kids progress forward and pass their state-mandated tests in reading. We are unable to measure the percentage of marvelous benefits resulting from the one-on-one time of student and adult.
